Buying Guide
Buying a used motorcycle is a great way to save yourself some money while still getting a high-quality bike that you’ll love for years to come. Before you buy a used motorcycle, though, be sure to run through the checklist below. It can help you determine whether a given model is in good condition, making it a wise investment.
Tires
- Make sure tires are free from dry rot and other damage.
- Spin the wheels and make sure there is no wobbling.
- Hit the spokes with a screwdriver handle and listen for a "ping.”
- Check the chain for proper lubrication and adjustment.
- Check that the belt is free from cuts and abrasions.
Engine
- Check that the engine smoke is not heavy or odd-colored.
- Listen to the engine sound, which should be free of odd rattling or rumblings.
- Look over the exhaust for signs of damage or leaks.
Keep in mind that repairs to a used motorcycle engine can be expensive, so be cautious about buying a used motorcycle with engine issues.
Electronics
- Test the signal lights, brake lights, high beams, and low beams.
- Engage the horn.
- Test any electronic accessories, such as a GPS or upgraded audio system, and ensure everything was installed correctly.
Body
- Look over the fuel tank and make sure its paint coat is free of flakes.
- See whether the fenders and side covers are free of dents.
- Check that the seat doesn't contain tears or collapsed foam.
- Make sure any chrome is free from rust.
